Class 58 Locomotive Group in 2025: More Than Just One Locomotive

The Class 58 Locomotive Group has always been committed to the preservation and legacy of the entire Class 58 fleet. While many supporters may be familiar with our connection with 58016, it’s important to highlight that our efforts extend far beyond a single locomotive. Behind the scenes, we are actively working to support the history, restoration, and potential repatriation of the remaining members of this iconic class.

Ongoing Preservation Efforts

Our group works tirelessly to ensure that as many Class 58s as possible exist for future generations to appreciate. From sourcing parts and historical documentation to maintaining strong relationships with key industry stakeholders, every effort is made to safeguard the legacy of these powerful locomotives.

One of our most ambitious projects is the possible repatriation of the remaining four Class 58s from Spain. These locomotives, which have been stored in Albacete for many years, represent an important part of the class’s story.

Bringing them back to the UK is no small task. Still, we are actively exploring all possible avenues to make this a reality. We have engaged with various organisations in the UK and Spain to determine the best course of action, and we continue to push for their safe return. Whilst the repatriation of all four locomotives is our ultimate ambition, we are especially keen to see 58050 returned as this locomotive holds a significant role in the history of UK railways and is more prominent than ever with the news of the closure of Doncaster works.

Meanwhile, work continues to ensure that Class 58s in the UK receive the care and attention they need. This includes assisting owners, offering technical support, and sourcing spare parts to keep these locomotives operational. We are always looking for components that can help sustain the fleet, and we welcome contributions from individuals and/or companies with knowledge of available parts.

Supporting the Whole Class

Preserving the Class 58 legacy isn’t just about individual locomotives - it’s about the bigger picture. Our group is involved in:

  • Technical Support & Documentation: We constantly research, archive, and share knowledge about the class to assist restoration projects. This includes gathering original design plans, maintenance manuals, and historical records to ensure restoration work is as accurate as possible.
  • Advocacy & Awareness: By engaging with railway organisations, museums, and heritage railways, we promote the importance of these locomotives in British railway history. We attend railway events, publish articles and books, and liaise with heritage railway operators to discuss the potential future of preserved Class 58s.
  • Future Restoration Projects: We are keen to support potential restoration efforts beyond 58016, ensuring that as many Class 58s as possible remain operational or displayed for enthusiasts to enjoy. Several locomotives remain in storage, and we are actively working to explore their potential for restoration and public display.

Looking to the Future

Our work doesn’t stop with preservation; we are always thinking ahead to the long-term sustainability of the Class 58 fleet. Part of our vision is to see these locomotives survive and thrive, whether that means further mainline opportunities, heritage railway operations, or static preservation for educational purposes. We also continue collaborating with other preservation groups and railways to explore new possibilities for these locomotives, ensuring they have a meaningful role in the railway community for years to come.
